Like Bali and Bandung, I never get enough of Jogja.
I love to try food in Jogja. All is good, from food street until the restaurant. All good and not expensive. You can buy a lot of food with reasonable price and mostly lower price than any big city in Indonesia. I don't know why, maybe because Jogjakarta is known as The Student City so the prices are follow their market.
Which place to go when you need proper delicious meal during your stay in Jogjakarta:
Gudeg
I didn't like gudeg when I was a kid. No matter how often my mom made it at home. However when I'm older I started to fall in love with this food, especially when it came originally from Yogya. usually I got the gudeg from relatives who travels to Yogya in Kendil package. Kendil is a traditional bowl made from clay. However in present time mostly Gudeg was packaged in carton box so it's more smiple for people to bring it to their home town.
Gudeg itself is made from young unripe jack fruit (Javanese: gori, Indonesian: nangka muda) boiled for several hours with palm sugar, and coconut milk and has additional spices include garlic, shallot, candlenut, coriander seed, galangal, bay leaves, and teak leaves, the latter giving a reddish brown color to the dish.i t is often described as "green jack fruit sweet stew". (wikipedia).
It usually served with opor ayam or chicken cooked in coconut milk, sambel goreng kerecek or spicy cow skin chips cooked and fried tofu and of course white rice. It so delicious. I'm in low carbs diet but i can not resist no to eat gudeg with rice. Lately there more variety of gudeg. It also served with very hot side dish, it's called gudeg mercon. And I love spicy food. My favourite are gudeg Yu Djum at Kaliurang or Wijilan and Gudeg mercon bu Tinah at Pakuningratan which only open at night.
Soto Kadipiro
Never leave Jogja without trying this soto. Soto is a traditional Indonesian soup mainly composed of broth, meat and vegetables. Many traditional soups are called soto, whereas foreign and Western influenced soups are called sop (wikipedia)
It's so delicious. It's served with satay, tempe or tahu and perkedel or potato cake. They also has this sarsaparilla drink that mede me remember my childhood. I don't how about you. This meal is suitable to eat in the morning for breakfast or brunch.
Ice Cream Rujak Pakualaman
It's good to have this for dessert. At first I just wanted to share a portion with a friend since I felt so full, but when I saw what so tempting it's looked like. I wanted a portion for myself. Hahahaha....
Rujak is a traditional fruit salad with sour, sweet and spicy taste and combined with traditional ice cream and this combination is unbelievable good. Actually I underestimated this dessert at first place, but once I tried, I didn't want to share my ice cream. It located at Puro Pakualaman, it's not even a stall, it's a moving stall and we almost didn't enjoy this ice cream if we were few minutes late because it's sold out so fast.
Sate Klatak Pak Pong Imogiri
Sate Klatak is a unique way to serve and cook satay. Because instead it used bamboo as skewer like ordinary sate in Indonesia it used skewer that made from part of bicycle's wheel. It has a light taste and different from other lamb satay. It served also with clear soup.
Gado-gado Colombo
When you feel guilty and need some vegetables, you can try this gado-gado or traditional mixed vegetables with peanut sauce. I didn't what made this dish so different from other gado-gado. However it's so delicious. And I had an unforgettable experience. While we're enjoying our meal there's an earthquake in big scale cause I can felt it and Everybody started to run outside the restaurant. Me and my friends just stood there looking to our unfinished plates and felt sorry to left this delicious meal.
Bakso Pak Narto
Last but not least, whenever you're hungry you can stop at any stall of Bakso Pak Narto. It's ordinary noodle stalls with meatballs. And it's good to eat in between your meal :)
And it's all good...
